Fear Not

In the movie “A Charlie Brown Christmas”, Charlie Brown notices a lot of commercialism and bad behavior.   After struggling with this for a while, during the practice for a school Christmas pageant, he yells out “isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?!”

Linus steps up to a microphone at the practice, and begins quoting a passage from the Bible (Luke 2: 8-14), which includes the following text: “and the Angel said unto them, Fear Not, for behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people”.  The tidings (or news) that the angel was bringing was news of the birth of Jesus.

I watched that movie dozens of times in my childhood.  I watched Linus quote that section from the book of Luke dozens of times, too.  But I never noticed one detail about Linus, until a friend pointed it out to me.

When Linus says “Fear Not”, he drops his security blanket.  That is the only time Linus ever dropped his blanket.

My friend pointed out Linus’ act of dropping his blanket at an important time for me.  I left my job about 2 weeks ago, and decided to start my own consulting/contracting business.  Originally I planned to wait for another 4 or 5 years to do this, but I decided to move more quickly a few weeks ago, and will try to make this a reality right now.

As I type this, I am hoping to sign my first client today.  That would be an important milestone.  I have been telling people “I just need one client-my first one….”

It is time for me to drop the blanket.
